Here's a blog update from Monique Long on the Medical Teams adventures from the past week: The past week has been amazing! From eczema to mini surgeries to reflux to bladder stones, I’ve learnt a lot. I am now able to take peoples blood pressure, check their pulse & resps & can speak a little bit of karin & thai. We treated a lady who was 100 years old & a number of babies were treated by our paeds nurse Erica. Doctor Ken & Karen surgically removed a splinter from a ladies leg that had been in there for four years. Nick gave his nursing skills a workout & was diagnosing patients like he had never stopped! Kathy & Jess worked together really well & Sue was a gun at whatever she put her hand to. Jenny & Guy were also working hard at figuring out what was wrong with patients with Guy speaking the language like he was Karin! The rest of us did what we could to help out from taking temperatures to sculpting balloons for the local children. Here's some pictures from the Week 1 Medical Team We were concerned about whether what we were actually doing was helping or just giving them a bit of pain relief for a week. The first patient to rock up after we were talking about this was an older lady who we had given Nurofen the day before. She proudly & excitedly showed us how she could stand up straight as she was bent over with arthritis & spinal degeneration. It was such a good moment to start the days clinic work with! While we were there we found out that our translator Nick (who became very fondly referred to as Dr Nick) had no family left except for one niece whose parents had just died. As she is 12, ICC policy dictates that she would not be allowed to come to the childrens village unless she had a sibling or was under the age of 8. When we found out that she was in an at risk situation we said that we could definitely find a sponsor between us if ICC would let her join the childrens village. She is now sponsored and will be at the village in about a month as it will take a while for her to travel there. All in all, I have loved my week with our team at the medical clinic (now known as the village people, with our own theme song!) God is blessing all of the project 3:18 teams amazingly & we can’t wait to get home & share the stories with you all. Monique |
